Texas Holey Rock

Texas Holey Rock

---COMPUTING YOUR ROCK PRICE ESTIMATE---
To help our customers compute their own cost estimates for the
different grades of Texas Holey Rock that we offer, we charge
for the rock on a PER-INCH of TOTAL DIMENSIONS basis.
Estimate the size of rock(s) you want in terms of length, width and heighth.
Add these dimensions together to determine total dimension in inches.
For instance, a rock of about 12 inches in length, about 6 inches in width
and about 9 inches in heighth would equal 27 inches of total dimension.
Multiply 27 times the per-inch price to get the approximate cost
of the size and grade of rock(s) you are contemplating ordering.
Note: We do not guarantee "precise" measurements of these rocks because
they are far too irregular in shape for us to measure with precision. We do, however,
offer a satisfaction guarantee as defined in the text below.

General Information: Armke's Rare Aquarium Fish is located at the edge of the famous and scenic "Texas Hill Country", an area of limestone-laden ranches and landscape that is the source of much of the "holey limestone" used in decorative Rift Lake aquariums around the country. We, of course, have ready access to this limestone in any quantity.
As most keepers of Rift Lake cichlids are aware, this Texas limestone serves as a buffer to help maintain water hardness and alkalinity. Its "solvency" in water through the eons accounts for the varied sculpturing this rock has undergone in nature, thus the presence of holes, caves and crevices. Not all Texas limestone rocks are alike. Only in certain areas or "pockets" of terrain can the holey limestone be found, and, even then, the number and size of holes vary greatly. Many holey rocks are too large for aquarium use; others break while being pried from the ground. For each "aquarium-worthy" specimen of holey rock, there are hundreds or thousands of pounds of limestone which are not useable.

Pricing: We offer four different quality classifications of Texas holey rock.

Grade I-- Authentic Texas holey rock suitable for decorating hard-water aquariums ranging in size from 5 gallons and up. These rocks are reasonably clean, but may require some care upon arrival. They may or may not have some dirt or debris left in or on them. The number and size of holes will vary widely. Some of the nicest shapes of all for aquarium use may have no holes that completely penetrate the rock, but each rock we sell will have been individually graded and judged acceptable for aquarium use. By now, we have shipped large amounts of "Grade I" rocks with almost 100% satisfaction from our customers. This is the grade of Texas holey rock normally sold in the U.S. at much higher prices. Many of the laudatory comments on our testimonials page, "What Our Customers Say About Us", refer to holey rock shipments of Grade I rocks. Rocks of this grade make great additions to breeding and holding aquariums. They also can be used as show decoration for aquarists on tighter budgets. (Note that this grade is priced BY THE POUND rather than BY THE INCH.) For examples of Grade I rocks, click here.

Grade II-- Very nice pieces of rock well suited for decorating hard-water aquariums ranging in size from 5 gallons and up. These rocks have been cleaned but not scoured. They may or may not have some dirt or debris left in or on them. The number and size of holes will vary widely. Some of the nicest shapes of all for aquarium use may have no holes that completely penetrate the rock, but each rock we sell will have been individually graded and judged to be more than acceptable for aquarium use. We recommend "Grade II" grade rocks for most situations; at lesser costs, they provide all the benefits of the more expensive grades except for degrees of eye appeal. (Note that this grade is priced BY THE INCH rather than BY THE POUND.) For examples of Grade II rocks, click here.

Grade III -- Excellent pieces of rock well suited for decorating hard-water aquariums ranging in size from 5 gallons and up. These rocks have been cleaned but may or may not have been scoured and treated. They may or may not have some dirt or debris left in or on them. The number and size of holes will vary widely. Some of the nicest shapes of all for aquarium use may have no holes that completely penetrate the rock, but each rock we sell will have been individually graded and judged to be more than acceptable for aquarium use. The Grade III rocks generally have defined bases, allowing for easy and safe placement of rock in the aquarium. They also have other features which distinguish these rocks individually from Grade II rocks. They are recommended for use in "show" or "display" aquarium setups. For examples of Grade III rocks, click here.

Grade IV -- Outstanding specimens of rock perfectly suited for decorating "show" or "display" aquariums ranging in size from 5 gallons and up. These rocks have been cleaned, scoured and treated. The number and size of holes will vary widely. Some of the nicest shapes of all for aquarium use may have no holes that completely penetrate the rock, but each premium Grade IV rock we sell will have been individually graded and judged to be of excellent quality suitable for use in show aquariums. The shapes and contours of the Grade IV rock is superior to lesser grades. Some specimens have many holes forming a "honeycomb effect", whereas others have nice plateaus on which mouthbrooding fish can spawn. Some of the Grade IV rocks have extended "arms" coming off of the main part of the rock which look very unusual and appealing. All Grade IV rocks have the bottoms cut flat if needed, so they sit safe and easy in the aquarium. Grade IV is relatively pricey and not for everyone. It is primarily for the individual who wants prime show-quality specimens for featured show aquariums. For examples of Grade IV rocks, click here.

Individual Armke Show Rock -- Superb, highly unusual specimens of rock perfectly suited for decorating "show" or "display" aquariums ranging in size from 5 gallons and up. These rocks have been cleaned, scoured and treated. Because of the unusual conformity of the rock, weight may be minimal in comparison to size of rock. The "individual Armke show rock" actually resemble works of natural art. Many of the pieces have extreme contours and crevices that seem to disappear into the rock(s). Others have large or small holes that may penetrate all the way through the rock leaving a "window" through the middle of the rock. These rocks are individually priced by the piece.

Selecting: All rocks are technically sold by the pound or inch, except for the "individual Armke show rock". General size specifications may be requested by customer...and are normally not a problem to fulfill. Bear in mind that we have rocks that look great in aquariums from 5 to 500 gallons. We routinely ship rocks up to 80 pounds in weight.

Computing Rock Weight: Because of the highly individual configuration of these rocks, dimensions can vary considerably even among rocks of nearly identical weights. As a rule of thumb, one can estimate 1/2 to 1 pound of rock per inch of combined dimensions (heighth, width, length). In other words, a rock with dimensions of 10" high x 10" wide x 10" long (30 inches of combined dimensions) usually weighs between 15 and 30 pounds. (Note: We have not yet received feedback of a Texas holey rock causing breakage of the glass in an aquarium, but this obviously can happen if care is not exercised in the placement of the rock.)

Special Terms of Sale for Rock Orders: We provide a "satisfaction" guarantee on all rocks shipped which have not been personally viewed by the customer. However, we provide no guarantee or warranty of any kind that involves shipping and/or packing costs. Customers shall be responsible for shipping and/or packing costs for receiving or returning any rock(s) purchased from Armke's Rare Aquarium Fish. There is NO BREAKAGE GUARANTEE with rock purchases. If a rock breaks during shipment, you own both pieces.

Delivery/Shipping: In normal quantities, the rock is shipped via UPS regular ground freight. Bulk quantities (1000 pounds plus) will require special freight arrangements. Estimate the freight for your rock(s) to be $.50 per pound in the 48 continguous United States, plus our $5 box/packing charge for each rock ordered.

Wholesale: In bulk quantities, the rock in all the various grades is offered to established retailers and distributors. Minimum wholesale order is 1000 pounds or 1000 inches, depending upon grade.
