Time to Scatter! Stein by OHI/Gerz, OHI 003
Artist: Pat Ford, an American wildlife painter
Maker: Gerz/Germany, commissioned by OHI; lithographic transfers printed in U.S. and supplied by OHI.
Size: .5 Liters
Lid: Pewter with figurine. Artwork for the figurine was supplied by OHI, and molds for the figurine were executed exclusively for this stein by Gerz master modeller Edwin Breiden. The figurine is made of hand-painted stoneware.
Design: Full-color lithograph made from an original painting by Pat Ford. The painting was commissioned for the stein. Ms. Ford said of it at the time: "I was once fortunate enough to observe the bobwhite quail nesting process from my living room. The male was the nest builder, forcing the female to help by throwing grass over her shoulder to him. He would periodically test the readiness of the nest, and then she would get in and try it. Then they would 'discuss' the nest's suitability, and the process would begin again until both were satisfied with the results. Outside the breeding period, bobwhites prefer to live together in a circle for both protection and warmth. The flush of a startled covey of bogwhites is a truly unforgettable sight, and I chose it for my subject matter here."
Color: The stein body itself is a rich brown color accented with 14k gold bands above and below the design.
Text: Only Pat Ford's signature on the body.
Notes: This was the No. 3 stein in OHI's American Wildlife Stein Series. Individually numbered, bottom stamped and limited to 1950 pieces worldwide, the stein was produced and sold out in the mid-1980s. Original retail price was $110. Secondary market examples command a sizable premium.
