From the Book, 25 Years of Wurstfest Mugs: "If scarcity of supply in relation to demand is the sole criteria, then 1974 Wurstfest Mug is the king of the series. More than any other design, it seems to be the missing link in otherwise complete collections. It has appeared on nearly every want list we have ever received, yet in the past 20-plus years, there have been only two recorded secondary market sales. Several years back, a one-liter gray example became available and sold for $145. In 1995, a half-liter gray mug was finally offered and sold for $387. As this was written in 1995, no 1974 cream mug has ever been offered for sale to our knowledge. Nor has any mug in salt-gray, which was introduced in 1974 and is the rarest version of all. (Salt-gray is a simulated salt-glaze finish produced by Gerz for a few years in the mid-1970s; it is attractive, but did not take decorations well.) Original price of the 1974 half-liter mug was $4.50, and the one-liter mug probably sold for $6.95 or $7.50. It sold out before the end of the 1974 Wurstfest and was already in high demand on the aftermarket by the end of the event." --Ken Armke
