From the Book, 25 Years of Wurstfest Mugs: "The 1990 Wurstfest Mug was created during a year of transition. For one thing, the year 1989 had been the 20th and final in Opa's Haus' long association with the Gerz factory in Germany. Our old friend, Erich Kraemer, had retired from the firm and things had changed. For another, the dollar had plummeted again against foreign currencies, and we were looking at a 30 to 40 per cent increase which we would have to pass ;on! Shopping hard to circumvent the huge increase, we purchased Oriental-made blanks for the mugs...bought the ceramic transfer decorations from our old U.S. supplier...and had the mugs decorated in the U.S. We negotiated with a fledgling German firm, Beyer GmbH, to produce the steins at a favorable price. Completing the production team was Lance International, which made the owl figurines for the stein lids from Lowell Davis' original sculpture. By these methods, we were able to hold the original prices at $15 for the mug and $65 for the stein. At the same time, we reduced the overall edition limit from 2500 total pieces to 2200 by reducing the number of mugs to be made. Nonetheless, we received much criticism for the Oriental-made body. Despite our attempts to explain the price problem, some loyal collectors threatened to quit the series if we did not return to German manufacture. So what happened? The mug quickly sold out and has been traded with frequency in the aftermarket. The German-made stein was a relative flop--still 42 pieces short of a sellout as this was written (1995)." --Ken Armke
