From the Book, 25 Years of Wurstfest Mugs: "In midsummer 1995, I told my assistant, Melanie, that we needed a special edition piece of some kind to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Wurstfest. After all, how many festivals get to be 35 years old? Should we, I asked her, do a pendant (like in 1988), or perhaps a pin (like in 1989)? No, Melanie said, it should be a special stein. Would we have enough time for the giant task of putting together a nice stein? Well, sometimes things just seem to fall together correctly as if they were meant to be. Just at the point where we needed some superlative artwork--and quickly!--Sieglinde Schon Smith, by now well-known as a former child model for Sister M.I. Hummel, phoned me and said excitedly, 'I have something I want to show you right now!' What she wanted to show me was the wonderful piece of artwork that adorns the Wurstfest 35th Anniversary Stein--artwork which she conceived and executed that ties The Hummel Museum of New Braunfels beautifully with Wurstfest. (If you're not familiar enough with the Hummel legacy, be advised that Hummel is the German word for bumblebee, and that Sister Hummel often used and drew bumblebees to symbolize her name.) Thewalt, our stein supplier in Germany, offered to modify one its most appealing stein bodies for the project and promised to push the project through in time for Wurstfest 1995s. Every stein was individually numbered, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each stein in the edition were given to The Hummel Museum." --Ken Armke
